An Old Friend Will Be Coming For The Holidays, The Mcrib

With winter right around the corner we all have a lot on our minds and are making plans. Most of my plans involve this delicious sandwich you see above, enthroned in a hand towel.
Sidenotes:
- I do not eat at Mcdonalds or fast food.
- I eat a lot of McRibs.
- I created the first Myspace group devoted to the Mcrib titled “Citizens For The Preservation Of The Mcrib”, it i now defunct for reasons that i’ll get to shortly.
- The McRib was honored in The Simpson’s episode “I’m Spelling as Fast as I Can” where Homer ditched Lisa’s spelling bee to follow the Ribwich Tour with a bunch of hippie ribheads.
(click to watch video)
- In an episode of The Boondocks, a back-from-a-coma Martin Luther King, Jr. ate one, exclaiming “Oh snap! No they didn’t! A boneless rib sandwich!”
The Myspace group for the Mcrib was closed down because we realized our plight was in vain. The problem wasn’t that Mcdonald’s didn’t know people loved that delicious sandwich enough to keep it around. Noted Mcrib aficionado Jason Wiley joined the group just like we did, he loved masticating Mcribs as much a the next straight American guy did.

But he was in far deeper than we knew. Turns out his Dad worked in the pork industry. Now why would it behoove Mcdonalds to only serve the Mcrib (at over $2 per sandwich) in the winter months? Well, with everyone eating turkey, chicken and beef for the holidays, pork goes begging on the marketplace and the price plummets. When Mcdonalds decides to serve something, they suddenly become the largest consumer of said item– whatever it is. So, plainly put, Mcdonalds realized they could make a killing off something that you could hardly give away otherwise.
The Mcrib has definitely lost something over the years (but its still the most delicious sandwich around). Jason Wiley and I sat down one day over two Mcribs each a few years back and we both noticed immediately that the recipe has been changed somehow. I’m guessing along with white meat chicken for their nuggets they were also forced to use the healthy parts of the pig.
Some nights I sit up at night wondering if McDonalds has any 1990’s era vintage Mcribs freeze dried in some sandwich safe somewhere, and if they did, how much would one fetch at a live auction.
Christian missionaries should go to extremist areas of the middle east armed to the teeth with McRibs, I bet after a few short months you’d be hard pressed to find a Moslem or a face that wasn’t covered in barbecue-sauce.
Please feel free to share McRib related stories, memories, sightings and holiday plans in the comment area below.

Oh is it really now? Nov 14th, 2007, No Mcribs in Southern California.
UPDATE:
Reader Brent has indeed placed an ebay ad for McRibs. Look at the prices. The shipping price is just out of hand. I would consider paying $50 though.

You’re a lucky man John. I just called my local McDonald’s and they said they haven’t heard anything about it yet. I’m getting worried.

Another guy from St. Louis. I performed a McRib hat trick for lunch. If I haven’t gained a hundred pounds by January, I’ll feel I’ve failed as a man.

McRib hat-trick. Sage.
It’s nice to see other mcrib enthusiast leave a comment. If McRibs dont come to california would anyone be interested in mailing me one packed in dry ice? I will pay all shipping expenses.

I’ve called every mcdonalds around the north seattle area. The few people I spoke with who could speak english had never even heard of the greatest sandwich to have ever existed….
October 31st, 2007 at 10:57 pmI’m so sad….
andyfox1979
the manager I talked to sounded faintly hispanic but said to me very earnestly that:
“it’s my favorite sandwich too”, like he was admitting something tawdry. I sure hope that McRibs will be coming here soon.
@The st louis guys, I know you started off strong (3 mcribs in one day) have you found that you’ve burned yourself out on the mcribs or do you still enjoy them?

I live in Kansas City and have a lake home in South Missouri. The Kansas City stores don’t have McRibs yet but the lake has them. There needs to be a better way to handle this. I am a republican but do believe the gov’t should get involved and require McDonalds to serve McRibs for every meal every day. McRib and hashbrowns…..??? Hell yea!
November 14th, 2007 at 9:24 amandyfox1979
John i’m a republican/libertarian also, and I believe that the government should stay out of peoples lives unless its an emergency, I think the game McDonalds is playing with us qualifies as an emergency. Here it is, a week away from Thanksgiving and still no goddamned McRibs anywhere in Southern California.
I’m getting furious just writing this.

This year my wife decided to have a dry run thanksgiving day to test out her recipes. We soaked the bird in a brine solution she got at William Sonoma it really kept it moist. OMG, the turkey was so good and I get to do it again in a few days!

Wow. truly funny stuff. just curious andyfox, did you ever get your fix? i mean i think mcribs are good but i could live without one. they sell pretty much the same thing in the grocery store. i got one for free at high school one day and couldnt tell the difference
September 14th, 2008 at 10:43 pmandyfox1979
nope. I doubt the supermarket or high school cafeteria mcribs are even in the same ballpark, although you’re lucky you get something similar for free. I’m hoping that this is the year I will eat a mcrib. Say a prayer for me.

We have the McRibs here in Wisconsin right now. Yummy, yummy in my tummy.

I think the McRib will always rise again because of stories like: “I have eaten 6 mcribs and the have been in Nebraska for about a week”
I also think its obvious they only do the limited time offer on McRibs because that will coax people into binging on them (and thus make more money off the glorious things then they would probably make if they were a menu regular).
After having a bad experience with Mickey D’s I’ll probably only go back any time soon if I see “MCRIB IS BACK” and hear a heavenly choir. Dammit, my stomach wasn’t growling before I read this…
McRib. The phoenix of fast-food sandwiches.

I absolutely love the McRib, everytime it came back my brother and I competed to see who would get to eat one first. He usually won. Unfortunately it hasn’t been back in the Chicago area for a looooooooong time and I miss it. It always came around when football season started and I remember waiting for it every year. Please bring the McRib back McD’s is not the same without it.

Went to my local McDonalds in the Tampa Bay area today, and was informed that it will be in our area around the end of November.

Andy-
Thanks for your comment on my Retire the McRib Blog. Every time the McRib comes back, I want to vomit. It is as disgusting and vile a creation as has every been foisted upon the public. I urge everyone to petition McDonald’s to once and for all RETIRE THE MCRIB!!
November 8th, 2008 at 8:13 amMike
McRibs are back in the Cinci area (as of about a week ago)!
November 11th, 2008 at 8:04 pmThanks for the back story on why McRibs show up during the winter months. I hadn’t realized the time of year that they reappear has an annual pattern. I’ll just add it to the reasons I love fall.
andyfox1979
Rob: if this group of ribheads saw you unarmed they’d tear you apart like a pack of wild dogs because of your vile hate-site.
Any southern california sightings? Please update me as soon as you see the sign.
