So Yeah, *67 (star 67) Doesn’t Work Anymore

Some friends and I were arranging an exotic dancer for a friend’s going away party and learned the hard way that *67 doesn’t work to block your number from cell phones anymore. It won’t show up as “restricted” or “private caller” it shows up now as, well, you.

My friend who’s in the real estate business, who says he commonly calls clients using *67 and explains that he’s calling from a different location was mortified.

I’ll admit that i’ve made a few star 67 calls in my day.

Anyone know when this changed or why?

So yeah, the way we found out is that a few of the calls turned into prank calls and somehow (?!) the exotic dancers and their eminemy boyfriends called back.

Then we tried calling each others phones.

This sudden knowledge made the room feel like a Raymond Carver story, as if all of us were sitting at the glass breakfast table in silence, a bottle of cheap vodka in the center, tumblers all around, the 5am sun starting to shine through the window, and a feeling like we all lost our way somewhere.

Well, mostly Arash and Steve had that look about them.

It does still work, i just tried it, and the caller id shows unknown number.

I just used my Sprint phone to call my brother’s T-Mobile and it worked.
I haven’t looked into it but I’m sure there’s a way to unblock any blocked number and I know that you can trace a call even if it shows up as private/unknown.

I tried *67 from my Spint phone and then called it back using my Vonage Phone and both shows Unknown Caller. So *67 is working in some areas. I have a friend who bought a prepaid phone card but when he calls the card number and then dials the number he wants to speak too, the Caller ID shows the original number he dailed from. You would think that the person he is speaking with would get the caller ID from the Prepaid Service number. I guess there is on way to prevent that except *67 if it works in his area?

How do you find out what the number is if it is calling your phone private? Any ideas?

This is why *67 didn’t work when you tried it:

“It is imperative that you are aware that there are certain cases when blocking your number will not work. For instance, if you call a toll free number (I.E. 800, 866, 877, 888, etc.) your caller information will be automatically displayed to the toll free recipient. The same applies for Emergency services (I.E. 911, the fire department, etc.), who are able to not only see your number, but also your address and the location from which you are placing the call.”
