The Best How-To Videos Of 2008
You might know that I run the marketing department for a site called WonderHowTo. We launched in March and now 8 Months later have nearly 3mm uniques per month.
This is a natural fit for me because I was dabbling in how-to here on this blog for awhile: check out the how-to category tab above.
What I like about the how-to space is that it services the needs of two types of people:
- people who think they know everything
- people who don’t know very much.
Check out my article on the Dunning Kruger Efffect for more information about that dichotomy. I probably fall into the 1st category although I am fairly honest when I don’t know about something. Usually though, know-it-all’s will run and learn about something very quickly if they don’t know it already.
WonderHowTo is a good place for that.
Again, both of these people are necessary parts of an equation, and with how-to’s there is an agreement between the content producer and the content consumer, that is that one will teach and one will learn.
I once showed people how to convert seconds into minutes and seconds in excel, exported from Google Analytics and the debate is still raging on. That is the fun part. Other know it all’s joining in and other know-not-much’s asking more questions.
For time out of mind people have been trying to tell people how to do things properly, starting with The Bible, later Thomas Paine’s Common Sense and my personal favorite poem how-to This Is What You Shall Do, by Walt Whitman.
Anyhow, WonderHowTo hopes to pick up where those left off. Our community chose the best how to videos in 12 categories and voted on them.

How To Cook
Some good videos for learning how to cook. We should be adding recipes and text versions of these videos at some point. If you learn how to cook a few things well people won’t be afraid to eat your food. That last part is in no way directed towards Erica.
How To Hack
If you want to learn how to write php, C, or how to customize your computer or electronic device, this section has everything.
How To Dance
I’m not a very good dancer and watching these videos doesn’t help me dance better because I don’t have much privacy in my life, but if you have some privacy and a modicum of natural ability you can learn some pretty cool dance moves here.I did learn how to do the robot dance and one night at the beauty bar me and Steve were dancing doing the robot and then he like kept acting like a robot all night. He told the bartender: “I-would-like-a-beer-please” in this robot voice and the bartender was like “what a weirdo that dude is” not knowing he was my friend.
Go learn some stuff.
