While I share your enthusiasm about hating hipsters, I really don't know if taste in music alone can group people in the hipster catagory. I think it's all really about the attitude that people have towards people who don't share their same tastes in music. I love all of the underground hiphop artists that you listed, and I listen to them not because they're "underground" but because their music is interesting and not the retarded jackassery I hear on the radio. El-p works with Wu Tang, so Wu Tang must be some hipsters... and is Kool Keith really considered mainstream? I love the guy, but his most recent shit has really been pretty awful (Dieseltruckers was awesome though!).

But I ENTIRELY agree with you that it's ridiculous to hate music because it's become "popular" or "mainstream". I will always like the Smiths, the Cure (are they hated by hipsters?), the Postal Service etc. regardless of what some cordoroy vest wearing cock sucker thinks!

Country: 100% sucks... not debatable. I endure the occasional taylor swift song in mixed company only to raise my chances of play haha (kidding... I'll smash any speaker system puking out that shit)

Old school rap: The lyrics are simplisting, the flow repetative, but the tone, emotion, and message were revolutionary. I won't say most of it is good or that I listen to it (save tupac n biggie... but they aren't that old school) but I think that "respect" is a valid term to use in this situation.

Punk: never liked it never will. bunch of whiney pussy bitches who's parents didn't hug them enough or their girl friend broke up with them. if you want girls to like you, don't wear their jeans...

Underground hip-hop: I respectfully have to completely disagree with you. just because something isn't widely known or radio raped doesn't make it bad. you listed off some supremely shitty rappers above. Look up Heiroglyphics, Deltron 3030, Chip the rippa, brother lynch hung, devin the dude. (i'm not a huge fan of most of those guys but their lyrics are crazy). the reason they aren't that popular is because people want to hear club bangers, catchy beats, and auto-tone (god help us). they wouldn't know good rap if it slapped them across the face with it's junk.

HIPSTERS: are the satan spawn of this earth. I don't care you think hipster is different than alt, or emo, unique, counter culture, cutting edge, or artsy... you're a bunch of twatwaffles that need to have the shit kicked out of you. I've never witnessed such blatant insecurities coupled with a disturbing level of self absorment and "better than you" attitude. I'm one pair of skinny jeans on a dude from going postal on the whole lot of you with a two by four.

the fact that "hip" is in your self proclaimed title only proves that you are as big of a whore to culture change as the mainstream media. you try to be alternative and counter culture, but the only way to know how to do that is by copying other people that are. you are, therefore, unopinionated and would sacrifice your own intrests and tastes to make friends that fit a certain identity that you so desperately crave to fit.

this might have been offensive if it didn't read like a 13-year olds forum posts...

So there were a few homosexual bands in the 80s hardcore punk scene, so what? At least they were accepted. The majority of the bands weren't homosexual. Black Flag is good because of the music they made. Back before the internet, you found bands at this place called a record store, or even a live show. And at a time where the punk scene was turning into new-wave trend music, black flag was completely original. That's what caused people to enjoy them. Now there's bands all over the place that have been influenced by them.

I also love how you trash on underground music for not sounding up to par with mainstream music. If the band had a million dollar contract and could go to the top studios in the world, their music would sound just as overproduced and bland as the rest of the shit that's mixed for radio.

i agree that this article sucks, but i wrote it to make hipsters mad. so if saying coldplay is good makes hipsters pissed, well, i just humped my couch while reading a rolling stone review from 1999 calling Coldplay's music "exciting" and "daring". Also, it had a photo of them wearing unironic business suits. I was listening to The Fray when i did that.

I totally agree with this with the following exception: Johnny Cash basically was a hipster in his scene. I think that's why they revere him so much. That and he's widely respected, but you only have to own one CD that you've listened to twice and you can pass yourself off as a fan because his music is catchy and easy (ahem, aka pop).

I like a lot of old country and a good amount of the new stuff. The reason I like the older stuff better is that to me it sounds more like country and some of the new stuff sounds like bad light rock. I really like Gary Allan. I wasn't a big fan until I saw him live. Great musician and a funny guy. His keyboard player is insane.

I also noticed that "Meade Skelton" (a hipster name if I ever heard on -- probably had some seriously douchebag parents) carefully omitted Hank 3 from his list of acceptable new country. He put in Wilco, but must have thought Hank 3 was just too gratuitous and obvious.
