Sort Of A Book Suggestion: The Tragedy Of Freedom By Jonathan West

Thursday, 21 Aug 2008

Some nutbag Republican friend of mine is always laying his hawkish righty books on me since he knows I’ll read anything anyone gives me and also that i’m very susceptible to craziness and all it takes is a little suggestion.

The lates book isn’t too bad, it’s  called The Tragedy Of Freedom By Jonathan West.

Here’s a picture of what the book looks like in case you ever find yourself in a John Birch Society bookstore (or on Amazon):

Quick Aside: when and who do you suppose thought it would be a good idea to slam the name Joe into the name Nathan to create Jonathan? It’s almost as ridiculous as my old NascarDirt.com pen name “Dougdave”.

Here’s a couple pull quotes to get yourself all worked up:

“A Liberal needs to say kind things about poor people to gratify himself. It simply violates a liberal’s sense of decency to say something critically true about such people. Instead he searches for comfortable neutral criticisms such as `lack of education, overpopulation, lack of industry, etc.’ To say these things is to say nothing. These conditions are co-indications of poverty, they are not the causes of it. People are poor because they behave in ways that result in poverty. They breed excessively. They spend all their money on immediate desires rather than saving and investing. They party every night rather than study and plan. They drink. They are lazy. All these actions result in poverty.”
–(p. 121)

Anyways, this book isn’t bad, and I really like this quote above but the editors of these books need to teach these writers how to not sound so pissed when they’re writing. Also, they come across as sounding a little racist too (not that it matters really— that someone writes something racist) which might turn some readers off.

Liberalism is a media-induced judgment disorder, not an ideological doctrine. Liberals have been conditioned to rely on their feelings and to judge people and events, not on some moral or logical basis, but on how they gratify their own emotions. Liberals use a non-objectivist kind of decision making with no relation to future impact. Their politics serves only as an emotional tonic for unhappy reality, the sole purpose of which is to feel good. With such morally and mentally perverse people in charge of our opinion-forming institutions is it any wonder our society also seems to lurch toward madness and self destruction? (p. 117)

I guess overall I like reading stuff like this sometimes because it seems so dangerous and fraught with urgency all the way through. It’s like a suspense novel.

Here’s a guy who knows whats wrong with this country– but it’s never like “well see what you can do in your spare time to educate others, pass out fliers maybe”… Ha no, its always like “WE MUST DO SOMETHING NOW!” (Witness the American Flag themed United States map all exploding to shreds on the cover. This is Serious Fucking Business [SFB])

I’m tired of everyone’s race and culture and language and experience and blah blah blah being so sacrosanct when most people I know have no culture. How are we supposed to get culture if we can’t even talk about what our culture is or what your culture is?

Most Americans reject their authentic American culture because it’s like some defect or something— compared with “other countries”. Never mentioning which “other countries” they mean– when I hear that phrase, I imagine like noble and fancy other countries, but they probably mean some boring place like Finland that I wouldn’t recognize if I tripped over it. Yet, every year a recent college grad will go to France and become smitten with the country and live there for a year. Sadly, that’s apart of our dumb culture and the French people know it and make fun of us for it. Who cares! Now i’m feeling crazy too.

Anyway, thanks Jonathan West for the crazy book.

Reading crazy stuff is good for you.

Go read some crazy stuff.

warning: i dare some liberal to start with me today, wednesday august the 20th because i’m ready to rock.
