Steve Martin Is Not Funny On SNL

Sunday, 22 Mar 2009

Something about comedians getting old makes them not funny.

Steve Martin was especially unfunny here on SNL tonight. He just looked old and out of touch. How do I know he’s old and out of touch? Well he wasn’t wearing a fedora (like Musical guest Jason Mraz).

Wearing a fedora is a sign that you’re hip and “with it”.

Comedians get used to having their lines written for them in movies and TV shows and everyone loves them and they lose whatever pressure they once had to be funny.

The song he sang was terrible. Something about being late for school. Not even one funny line in it. Doesn’t SNL do QC on the material these special guests bring in with them?

And of course the audience laughs and applauses. Because he’s old. And he’s contributed so much.

Well I say there’s an up and coming comedian out there who could’ve brought a lot more to the table. We’re so nasty about who can become and stay famous, but once they’re in the pantheon, they stay. Like supreme court judges.

Screw that.

A word to the comedy world and SNL in particular:

Bury your dead.

There’s no old-timers league for comedy, and we’ve time and time again why.

If this guy was a legendary factory worker they would put his picture up with a cheap gold frame and say “Harry was a great guy.. damn hard worker.. He could do the work of ten men…even when he was drunk! ”

But they wouldn’t let him come in and operate a forklift,  senilely knocking boxes and shit all over the place, causing harm to younger, sharper workers and moreover undermining his legacy in the eyes of those younger, sharper workers.

Tonight Steve Martin knocked boxes and shit over.

  1. I totally agree. After that song, my boyfriend turned to me and said “he is in a bubble.” I don’t know what happens to people when they are famous but it seems like no one has the courage to tell them that some of their material is not funny. Also, it is quite obvious that he is extremely self-important. The skit with the women from SNL falling for him and singing about how much they love him was uncomfortable to watch-more like he was saying “oh yeah, this happens to me all the time(and I deserve it)” than actually making a worth-watching skit.

  2. I had the same reaction, Sarah. Additionally, I felt embarrassed for Martin while watching him during some of those cringe-inducing “SNL” skits. Toward the end of the show, he even appeared to be reading the cue cards. Talk about “phoning it in.”

It’s been quite some time since I’ve found Martin the Performer entertaining. His humor nowadays seems much too forced. However, Martin the Author … now, that’s an altogether different story. I’ll stick to reading his exquisitely crafted prose.

  3. Yeah that skit made no sense to me. it must be some inside joke over there. he looked like a total shithead. he was a great comedian and has done some really funny stuff, we all know that.

SNL has gotten really ass-kissy. Look at their treatment of Obama. They don’t even make fun of him.

  4. I didn’t see this SNL, but this recent-looking clip with him and Tina Fey is pretty funny: http://www.hulu.com/watch/10230/saturday-night-live-tina-fey-monologue

  5. [...] SNL isn’t funny anymore. Why not pick Jamie Foxx– or someone who actually has like a thriving showbiz career? [...]
