Sunday Mixed Tape: Breakup Songs

I’ve been meaning to make a mixed tape to share on here for awhile now, so I grabbed a Mixed CD titled “Camping CD #4″ and put it some of it here.
I like camping and mixed CDs.
This playlist was made right after a rather difficult breakup. I would be sleeping in a one man tent.

Mixed CDs are nice because they can capture and solidify a part of your life in music. Unless you listen to techno, in which case they are just annoying and repetitive and I have to listen to it also when you pull up next to me in your convertible. Why do people that listen to techno drive convertibles? Maybe they’re just trying to be as obnoxious as possible. Woo! my car doesn’t need a reinforced roof and my music don’t need no lyrics or instruments.
While I don’t have any of the feelings or leftover tension from that relationship, I do have this CD still. On the front of the CD is a hand drawn picture of a tent and a campfire. My drawing skills are like sub-kindergarten level so you can imagine how sweet it looks.
Mike Doughty- The Only Answer
Mike Doughty used to sing in a band called Soul Coughing. I like his solo stuff much better. My ex girlfriend introduced me to Mike Doughty and I’ve traded emails with him and stuff. I bet she listens to Mike Doughty with her current boyfriend. Funny how that goes.
In an email to Mike Doughty I told him that he should have changed the lyric to “you were one of 5 or 6 answers…” . He said this:
haha.

Against Me! – Sink Florida Sink
I loveĀ Against Me! . My friend Mike is an Against Me! fanatic and gave me my first Against Me! mixed cd. He got so pissed when i bought a Reinventing Axl Rose t shirt. I swear he acted like a cuckolded husband when he saw me wearing that fucking shirt.

Sink Florida, Sink is about a breakup and probably also about how Florida sucks.
At 1:36 it sounds like he’s saying “The Jew will see what is wrong with everything“. Really he’s saying “That you will see what is wrong with everything”. I was listening one day and was like whoa, anti-Semitic music, and it sounded more and more like “The Jew” every time I listened to it.

Sound Team- Born To Please
I can’t remember how I first heard Sound Team, but Born To Please is one of my favorite songs and the first time I heard it I just thought it was just ok. Also, the song doesn’t begin to sound really good until like 1:30 into it. The lyrics in this song are all weird and all over the place although I think they stick to a cohesive theme.
After you hear this song you’re gonna be like, oh great I found a new band that I like. Sadly, their other songs aren’t nearly as good.

The Hold Steady- First Night
The Hold Steady is in my top 5 favorite bands. Their lyrics are intelligent and authentic and their musicianship is great. I’d suggest going to one of their shows next time they’re in your town.
First Night is about how good people that you like will look and seem the first night that you meet them or go out with them. As Craig says: she was golden with bar-light and beer. Yep, i’ve been there once or 250 times.
Most of the Hold Steady’s songs are about drugs, booze and women. The Hold Steady refers to the same Characters (A pimp named Charlemagne, Holly, Gideon) Places (Twin Cities Minnesota, Western Massachusets) in pretty much every album, which is nice since you are familiar with them and can relate to them. It’s very music-theatre.
Gideon’s got a pipe made from a pringles can. The funny thing about that line (besides the obvious) is he says it in the previous song on the album, “Same Kooks”.

Lucero- Drink Til We’re Gone
Lucero is probably my favorite band. They are described usually as Punk-Country. They aren’t alt-country. Alt-country is country but the singer has hair like Ryan Adams.

Lucero is essential camping or drinking music. I believe this song was written before the Mississippi river did kill everyone.

Also here’s Lucero doing a cover of Jawbreaker’s Kiss The Bottle:

J Dilla Feat Common- So Far To Go
They used to use this beat on KPRW’s (KPR Whitey as I call it) Chocolate City, which is a terribly racist name for a Hip Hop show, IMO.
J Dilla is dead now and Common still wears kangol hats years after Sam Jack made them the 2nd most annoying hat behind the hipster fedora. Common also wears hipster fedoras. Wait, so does Sam Jack. Why isn’t there a hit on those guys yet?
Anyhow, the lyrics for So Far To Go are both sexy and inspiring: We all have so far to go. Even Common doesn’t over “yo-you-gotta-show-the-ladies-respect” this one, although he does try. He tries.

Van Morrison- Madame George
Madame George is one of Van Morrison’s finest and thankfully not overplayed songs. The lyrics are beautiful and odd and the melodies are lovely. Astral Weeks is a great album, if you don’t already have it go get it.

Late Add: De La Soul- Ooh
This is a fun song and pretty much appeals to everyone to say “Ooh ooh.” Really there’s very few people who can listen to this song and if they followed instructions perfectly wouldn’t say “Ooh” at least once. “If you’ve never been shot or stabbed”.. Gosh pretty much every punk ass cracker I know.

Alright, i’m not gonna put any more songs because I doubt anyone is gonna spend 45 mins on this page rocking out. If you like any of these songs say so and i’ll post this sort of thing more often.
